Year 6 Residential Visit to France - May 2011

The pupils and staff left just after midnight on Thursday 19th May. Mrs. Cooke phoned school Friday afternoon to say the group had arrived in Caen and were just waiting for the final transfer to the Chateau where the children will be staying. The ferry journey had been very smooth and the children had enjoyed it. The weather in France was in the low 20s which made our rain seem even more miserable! Some indoor games were being organised for that evening but mainly it would be early to bed as there were a couple of children who had not yet slept!

The group will log in again Saturday evening and the website will be updated as soon as this arrives. The diary has arrived from France - sounds like they are having a great time.

Dear all,
The sun has been shining here in Normandy and we are having a fantastic time! It all started with the very lively coach trip down to Portsmouth, picking up our driver on this trip who is called Dave. The crossing was calm and sunny and we all found time to go up on deck, swan around the ship that "was like a hotel, miss" We were situated at the very front of the ferry with all round windows. What with the sun shining through many of us fell asleep, some literally on  the floor in the sun (pictures to follow!!). A lady did comment that our children were incredibly well behaved and that she thought it  was a pleasure to be on board with  them. A credit to the children...we had only been on the ship 20mins!PGL  was another 2 1/2 hrs away, but some extra sleeping time. We arrived for food, which was delicious and there were cleared plates all round. In the evening, some hilarious wacky olympics were played with some ingenious shoe towers made. From there, showers and bed...a silent night.

Saturday 21st May
Up at 6.50am we soon had breakfast and made our way to the pretty town of Bayeux and its market. Here, crepes and various presents for the parents were purchased. A few boys contemplated buying the baby ducklings for 3 Euros but were swiftly distracted by the teachers! A picnic in the sun on the Caen Memorial site, complete with baguettes. Onto Pegasus Bridge and the little cafe with many, many, many things stuck to the wall and finally settling on the beach at Ouistreham where the children were taught how to play boules and they made dams to stop the sea from coming in. We all jumped back on the bus to head back for dinner. At the moment, they are all running around the wood to make the large campfire that we are going to sing and toast our marshaellows round, and as I type with the window open, I can hear their army style songs floating along the warm and fresh breeze. Seems a shame for today to end. Speak to you tomorrow!
Next installment for Sunday 22nd May
Dear All,
Sunday started warm and fresh and after a good nights sleep dreaming of campfires. We all set off to Fougeres Castle which is about 45 mins from here. We heard about the legend of the girl who was turned into a mermaid back in the 13th century and could be heard screaming just before bombs were droppped onto Fougeres during WW2...Following this exciting piece of news we explored the castle with zest. oh, and an audio guide due to all being in French!! The children loved it, climbing up towers and down into dungeons and sprawling out onto the castle gardens in the sun. A stunning walk through the town took us to the Jardin Publique where we had a picnic and a play. Back onto the bus, we soon made our way to the amazing Le Mont St Michel. It was packed, but we made our way up to the top by the Abbey. Travel groups formed and we slowly made our way down to the bottom stopping in many of the trinket shops; the contents of which will be displayed on your mantlepieces at home in 72 hrs!! Snails await us after our dinner tonight which will be followed by a disco. The girls are ready now, looking fabulous and the boys have declared they will sort themselves out after dinner! Dancing and lots of fun ahead...can't wait. An early start again and a trip to Coleville, Landing beaches and Arromanches (if time) plus the Hypermarket. A ferry from Ouisterham at 4.15pm will take us homeward bound to bring back your tired but exceptionally well behaved children with great memories. The next time we spk will be to start the phone tree about 9pm your time. Allow for 6 1/2hrs or so to get home....see you all then!
